I did the math: Over the past five years, I bought Pantene shampoo and conditioner at an average cost of $3.69 per bottle. I have supported a company that has done nothing but lie about their product and as a disappointed customer, I want my money back.

I am pissed off at this company, Procter and Gamble. Their products are so well known and definitely not the cheapest; you wind up paying more money because they are supposed to be better products. And their advertising is so misleading. You see all these TV commercials of models with luminous hair and think you can have hair just like that if you keep using Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner. I always thought that if you pay more, you get a better product but I realize that a 99 cent bottle of no-name brand is just as good.

I am fed up with getting duped by these companies. Every time you turn around it makes you wonder, ‘What on earth am I buying? What is in this stuff?’ Most importantly, why pay three times as much for a product when you don’t have to? I trusted Procter and Gamble; everyone has heard of them and I thought they were reputable.

This is what I want to say to the makers of Pantene: either make your product live up to your promise, or take it off the market.

They said it would make your hair stronger and the conditioner will make it smoother. The bottle that I have guarantees 75 percent smoother hair and right on the label it says, ‘Specially designed to strengthen hair against damage and control frizziness.’

Whatever. I am so disappointed and now I just keep my hair up in a ponytail because I certainly haven’t found a product that makes your hair stronger or smoother. Pantene is a bottle of consumer fraud.

A series of US-based ads for Pantene claimed the product made hair 10 times as strong. But subsequent testing revealed that the shampoo actually weakened hair.

#1 - Finnegan’s Too: The Finnegan’s on Ocean Drive is a lot busier, with a lot more tourists, and that makes Finnegan’s Too one of my favorite places to go prior to or after a Heat game. The selection of beers is decent, there are pool tables, and the drinks are stiff and none-too pricey. The low-key, generally low noise atmosphere makes it easier to talk about the game.

#2 - Pogies Pizza: Only a half mile away from the AAA, Pogies is a nice, casual restaurant that has great food, good beer, and satellite TV. It’s a great place to go when you want some decent food before or after a game, and don’t want to pay the often-exorbitant stadium-food prices. Pogies also has some nice outdoor seating, which can be a welcome change to the arena atmosphere.

#3 - Wesley’s Sports Bar: Wesley’s is a bit out of the way, but it’s a great place to go if you’re in the mood to party after a game. It’s really half-club, half-sports bar, and it does both admirably. Monday nights feature football, while Tuesday’s feature music, often by local bands. Weekends at Wesley’s see a DJ spinning hip-hop, and often a crowded dance floor. It’s a great place to go to celebrate a big victory - hopefully this year will see a few of those for the Heat.

Well, there you have it - a smattering of choices (fairly) near American Airlines Arena. Root for the Heat, and don’t go thirsty!

The two party system in America has not been troublesome up to recent days for several reasons. Firstly, it was always taken for granted that the singular goal of each party was identical. That goal was doing what was best for the country. The only real difference between the partisans was how to accomplish that goal. The American public trusted that the goal was singular and pervasive in the minds of most of our statesmen and we trusted that they would work out the ways and means and the country would move forward at the end of the day. Why is this not the case today?

Why have the differences that could be used to stimulate debate and excite reason dissimulated. Now the differences are likely to create impassible chasms, picketing, upheaval, and riot. The answers are not out of reach but they are unlikely to be sounded much less heard.

Reason number one is that today we have more politicians than ever before but far fewer statesmen. If we are looking for a George Washington or an Abraham Lincoln in our ranks we will be disappointed. In fact just for looking you could be mocked and labeled as a sentimentalist who is wallowing around in nostalgia trying to rediscover the glory that was Rome but is of another day.

Another obvious reason is that the terms Democratic and Republican have been replaced in large part by the terms liberal and conservative respectively. Denotations have moved over for connotations in our perception. When speaking of America’s perception of just about anything that is the place where reality is given its walking papers. Evidence of this is prevalent in the importance we now place on an individual’s personal opinion rather than a discovery of the truth as it relates to us collectively. Fueled by the fall of personal responsibility and the rise of personal rights liberalism has a life of its own that emphasizes only our responsibility to get our own.

From Hollywood, media, academia, and pop culture, right down to the street, the tune we dance to is an anything goes personal freedom that can’t be questioned as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. Gee, sounds like anarchy eh? Is liberalism anarchy? Tacitly it is but don’t expect a liberal to admit to anything, which would be conservative.

Examples abound everywhere in American culture and attitude. Who would have thought the day would come when it would be less important to fight to flush out our enemies than to fight to flush our unborn children down the toilette. The Roe V. Wade battle has lasted over a generation and cost millions of lives but who is comparing that to a couple of years in Iraq and a few thousand lives? Again is this more of what makes the definition of incongruity? Perhaps it is closer to what makes the definition of ridiculous.

To avoid the tyranny of prosecuting those who don’t have the right theology or faith in God we decided to let congress make no laws regarding religion. The connotation of that concept has also dissimulated to what is commonly referred to as “the separation of church and state.” Even if we could live with the little twist to the actual law first presented in the constitution we cannot live with the connotations that have emerged and now cling to the original meaning like rocks in the pockets of a drowning man. Now it could safely be said that America has expanded on the concept of “separation of church and state.” Now other separations are espoused and coddled more blatantly than may have ever been expected only a decade ago.

How about the separation of government and morality, the separation of political affiliation and character, the separation of life and death itself, sound harsh? It is but that is covered by the separation of hearing and learning or even seeing and believing. In the end it all leads to the separation of right and wrong. Sadly even the question about right and wrong in America is now being put up to the question of “who cares and who doesn’t.”

In a recent TV commercial the theme is a retired person who wants to fly rather than play shuffle board or some other dull activity. The presumption is that America will go on as usual and portfolios and personal security will swell to meet us in our golden years. Being the liberated people that this generation is we will jump in our piper cub or glider and take to the skies. Oh don’t listen to those gloomy doomsayers who are predicting not so favorable weather, after all they are not “scientists” they are merely kooks, self recognized prognosticators or just plain loony. Between the immutable laws of reciprocity and whatever is left to good reason in this country it takes no prophet to see that we are more likely to sit down and cry than to stand up and fly.

Liberalism may seem like the way to go but history and even the most extravagant connotation of the word justice says otherwise. Sinking morality and rising world hatred of America is only the beginning not just of bible prophecy but of something far more fundamental and wholly irreversible. What are the causes of an ear ache?

The tube connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose is called the Eustachian. This tube allows fluid drain out of the middle ear. However, if that tube’s lining is invaded by bacteria or viruses, the tube can become swollen and may fill up with a thick mucus. This leads to the inability of the fluid to drain normally. As bacteria grow in the fluid, pressure can build behind the ear drum and this causes pain.

Allergies, cold and other illnesses can cause the Eustachian tube to become blocked. When the adenoids become enlarged they can block the Eustachian tubes as well. These are all referred to as ear infections. They usually clear up within a week or two, but in the meantime they can be extremely painful and include fever and other symptoms. There are also times that an ear infection will last even longer than two weeks and may even become chronic. Additionally, even after the infection clears, the fluid can remain in the middle ear which can lead to even more infections and, in extreme cases, hearing loss.

What are symptoms of an ear ache?

Older children can tell you that their ear hurts. Their ear pain may also be accompanied with fever. Babies, however, and children who are too young to tell you where it hurts may cry or pull on their ear or ears. A child with an ear infection, regardless of age, may show signs of irritability, listlessness, have difficulty hearing and may not feel like eating or sleeping. This is particularly true with breastfed babies who have an ear ache. Because a breastfed baby suckles in a certain way that is different and more difficult than suckling from a bottle, this motion can irritate the baby’s sore ears causing him or her to go off his feed.

What is the treatment for ear aches?

There are several ways that a doctor may approach treating an ear ache. If the doctor suspects the infection to be bacterial, he or she may prescribe an antibiotic. Pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol products) and ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin products) can offer some relief and reduce fever if it is present. Aspirin, however, is not recommended. Children who are around people who smoke are at a very high risk of getting ear infections. Additionally, if they have had previous ear infections or have a family history of ear infections can increase their risk. It is no big secret that children in day care are exposed to many more germs and viruses so this is a large risk. A child who was premature at birth or had a low birth weight may also be at a higher risk. If a child has frequent colds or other infections, takes a bottle to bed, uses a pacifier or has a nasal speech that is caused by large adenoids blocking the Eustachian tubes he or she may be more at risk of developing an ear ache. Interestingly, males tend to show a higher incidence of ear infections than females. However, knowing the risk factors and knowing if your child fits into any of these categories can be the best defense. Prevention can be the best medicine.

Where It All Began

The year was 1922, place: German. I can say that it was the birth of horror movies. W Murnau started the terror and fear thru Nosferatu, nosferatuthe story about bloodsucking vampire. It wasn’t the first vampire movie, as in 1896 Georges Melies made Le Castle Du Diable, but Nosferatu was the first movie where we saw vampire destroyed by sunlight. This one boasted remarkable animalistic makeup that has not been replicated, even with modern technology. Dozens of vampire movies followed after that. In 1931 Universal Studio launched 2 legendary horror movies, Dracula with Bela Lugosi and Frankenstein with Boris Karloff. Both of the movie became a classic and very successful. Boris Karloff even became a legendary name in horror movies history. The Mummy (1932) a silent picture with horror icon Boris Karloff in the title role, remains a classic, with unforgettable make-up and atmosphere. In 1935, the sequel of Frankenstein, The Bride Of Frankenstein was made.This isn’t silent anymore.

Psycho

During 40’s the world’s on war, and it has changed the genre. Horror was almost forgotten as patriotic movies and war has taken the place. It slowly raised again around 50’s, where comedy and musical movies ruled. There were good ones took place at this time, House of Wax is one of the example. 1960 was the time for Hitchcock to make a memorable movie: Psycho. Too bad, this is the only horror movie by Hitchcock, cuz then he made lots of suspence thriller goodies like Rear Window, Vertigo,North by Northwest,Dial M For Murder that kinda changed the genre again. And remember, spaghetti western Movies in the late 60’s also had its moment.

The 70’s

This is the most creative year of Horror movies.Unlike before, horror movies got big exploration, where so many variation of story and evil came in. Note there were lots of controversy and protest happened here.The Exorcist (1973) for example showed disgusting scenes that never been imagined before, like the green puke to the face transformed to evil. This movie was controversial when Catholic Church protested that the demon cast-out in the movie was against the code of conduct. The shining, that based on Stephen King’s novel was one of the best one during 70’s. Later on from this decade to 80s and 90s, lots of movies was made based on his scary novel such as Carrie, Christine, Cujo, It, , Cat’s Eye, Dream Catcher, are the example. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was a low budget movie that reached a great result. This one introduced “the slasher movie” to the world that later followed by Halloween (say hi to Michael Myers) , Friday the 13th, Scream in the 80’s and 90’s and so on. Omen is a bonechillin’ movie that can still give you nightmare even with today’s technology of making movie.Simply unforgettable. Amityville Horror, based on the true story was the first movie that took place in the actual location. The report said a lot of bizzare and dreadful things were experienced by cast and crew in location.

The 80’s

Freddie Kruger

This is the decade of madness. All gory stuff were shown sadistically for viewing. cutted off body parts were seen everywhere. Nightmare on Elm Street that launched Freddy Krueger to horror hall of fame, and Jason Voorheyes slashing games in Friday the 13th are one of the example. These two had some of their sequels during 80s, together with 3 of Halloweens. And remember how Italian horror movies that have a very sick super bloody vision? Count Romero and Argento for this category. This is also the era where horror expanded to tv.

The 90’s

Funny thing happened in 90s. There’s a tendency of self defense and self actualization by horror character on terror they have made to people. For example Ghost, Bram Stocker’s Dracula that told the story about Count Dracula’s painful love to Mina, or Interview With Vampires that unlocked the mystery of vampire lives. Scream started a new genre, teen horror movies, slashing-serial-killer-who-did-it,which soon followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and some more. A note in 1999, an independent movie Blair Witch Project became a big phenomena,using a documentation technique to give us fear,tense and mental disturbance. This one inspired some other movies like St.Francisville Experiment, The Lamarie Project and tv series Freaky Links.

2000’s

Ringu

Still too early maybe to talk about horror movies in 2000s, but looks like Hollywood has running out of ideas. They are trying to widen up their view to see new ideas outside that can give new vision on the term of horror. The Ring, remake from Japanese movie was their first success. Followed by The eye, and some other remakes from Asian cinemas. This decade seems being led by Japan and Korea, by making so many horror movies with lack of effects or gory blood but still successfully tortured our feeling. They don’t go with the Hollywood pattern, they just dig everything else that hasn’t been touched yet. Thailand is also emerging as a good horror maker. Indonesian movies too, with amusing number of horror movies every year. We also mark the decade 2000 for the decade of sequels and remakes too, such as Halloween H2O, Freddy vs Jason, modern version of Bram Stocker’s Dracula, Dracula 2001, Halloween Resurrection , The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , House of The Dead, The Amityville Horror and so on. While the effort to combine some genres and produce something new has still been going on. Saw for example, combine the psycho thriller ala Hitchkock with slasher, sadistic, bloody and graphic scenes. My prediction? I think this decade will continue to do so. Hopefully in the next decade we will see some new approach, style and way to present horror movies. Let’s wait and see where the horror movies continue their path.

* 1 lb. mixed fish, cut in large dice (salmon, swordfish, tuna)
* 1 small rib celery, finely diced
* 1/2 small green pepper, finely diced
* 1/2 small red pepper, finely diced
* 1/2 tsp. Old Bay seasoning
* 1/2 cup bread crumbs
* 1 tsp. mixed tarragon & chives, chopped
* 1 cup white wine & 1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
* 1 egg
* 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
* 3/4 tsp. Tabasco sauce
* 1/2 tsp. salt
* 1/4 cup milk
* flour & oil as needed for cooking

sweet & spicy aioli sauce
* 4-5 cloves roasted garlic
* 2 oz. rice wine vinegar
* 1/4 cup Thai garlic chili sauce
* 1/2 tsp. salt, plus additional to taste
* 2 large egg yolks
* 2 oz. granulated sugar
* 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil

Place the chopped fish in a small sauce pan. Cover the fish with tap water, the cup of white wine and the 1/2 cup wine vinegar. Boil gently just until the fish is opaque (just barely cooked through and juicy).

Drain and place in a bowl with the diced vegetables, eggs, Dijon mustard, Tabasco sauce and seasonings, mashing the mixture together like a meatloaf or meatball mixture. Add the milk to the bread crumbs to moisten and incorporate into the fish mixture. Form this mixture into 8 patties , in a similar manor as making a hamburger patty. Chill until ready to cook.

For the sweet & spicy aioli sauce: place the sugar and vinegar in a small pan and heat over high heat, just to melt the sugar. Pull off the heat and reserve. Place the garlic cloves, eggs, salt and chili sauce in a food processor and turn on the power.

Very slowly incorporate the oil, the sauce should take on a thick mayonnaise consistency once you have added all the oil. Now with the machine still running, add the vinegar mixture, then stop the machine. You have created an emulsion, and the key to a successful emulsion is in the slow addition of the oil, so the sauce doesn’t separate. If it is too thick at this point you may incorporate a little water to thin it out. Check the seasoning, it should have a good balance of sweet, sour, spicy and salty flavors to really make your taste buds salivate.

Heat some vegetable oil, enough to cover the bottom of a large sauté pan, until it is very hot, almost smoking. Dip the fish cakes in a flour and then cook for 2-3 minutes on a medium heat, until nice and golden brown. Flip the fish cakes over and cook the other side until nicely golden browned also.

To serve, place the mixed baby greens on serving plates topped with a small amount of vinaigrette. Place the warm fish cakes on top, topping them off with aioli sauce. Enjoy!

Talk to any angler and they can expound for hours on the joys of carp fishing, whatever the time of year, but summer has got to be a favourite time. It’s tranquil, relaxing and exciting all at the same time. Here are some tips to help make your carp fishing even more enjoyable.

• Summer is a good time to try out new baits, rigs and ideas of your own

• If you are a regular at a particular water, study the fish movements to see if you can establish any patterns that might give you a clue as to where to fish on future occasions

• Look for obvious feeding grounds, for example, beneath overhanging trees and amongst weed beds

• Carp are very active in the summer months, enjoying the sun as much as we do, so eventually they will give themselves away

• Try choosing a bait which is similar to the natural foods that are around in abundance at this time of year, such as fruit and nuts

Winter

The once plentiful natural food will disappear during winter, so carp will try to gain as much weight as possible to help them survive the harsh weather. As with any cold blooded animal, low temperatures will slow them down a great deal, so it’s a good idea to locate the carp before you set up and start fishing.

As far as baiting is concerned, try to adopt the little and often approach, offering about 15-30 baits over a session. Loose feed these a couple at a time at regular intervals of about 30 minutes and try not to spread the bait around too much. As in the summer, it’s a good idea to try using bait which is similar in flavour to what is around naturally. Swan mussel and crayfish are still active at this time of year so if your venue contains these, try something like this.
